Tidal Current Skills


Cost: $225.00 Adult

Length: 2 Days

ALL PADDLING GEAR PROVIDED or bring your own
Specific Environment Level:
Strokes & Maneuvers and Rescues or equivalent required

Location: This class will meet either at Deception Pass or Ilwaco, Washington

This two day class will introduce students to paddling in current. It will be held in a location with eddies and a well-defined current stream. You will learn how to break in and out of eddies. You will also learn how to ferry across the current, forwards and backwards, and how to use ranges and other markers to judge position and speed.

All of the paddling skills that you possess will be applied and practiced in a moving water environment, including rolls, and rescues. We will explain the causes of tidal and non-tidal currents and the effects of topology and bathymetry on current. We will also emphasize the inherent dangers of moving water and the combined effects of wind and current on sea state. Group car camping sites will be reserved for the group. Student is responsible for their own meals and snacks.

Tidal Currents will be scheduled a couple of times during the summer and fall. Call to reserve your spot in the next class.

Outline: Tidal Currents

On the water, You Will Need:

- Tennis shoes or river sandals with wool socks or wetsuit booties
- Sunglasses with retention device (i.e. Croakies, Chums, etc)
- Sunscreen (SPF 30), lip balm (SPF 15)
- Sun hat, rain hat, and/or fleece hat
- Synthetic top and bottom (thermal underwear, heavier wt. for cooler weather)
- Rain coat and rain pants
- Nylon shorts and/or swimsuit
- Water bottle (1 quart)
- Towel and change of clothes for ride home
- Lunch and snacks

Optional Gear:
- Camera with film, batteries and dry storage
- Binoculars

Meeting Place/Directions:
This class will meet either at Deception Pass or Ilwaco, Washington. You will receive detailed instructions and a map with your confirmation packet.
