Surf Zone Skills

Cost: $125.00 Adult


Length: Full Day - 6 Hours

ALL PADDLING GEAR PROVIDED or bring your own
Specific Environment Level:
BCU 3 Star Award or instructor's approval required

Location: This class meets at the Oregon Coast, location to be decided.

This class introduces the student to the fundamentals of safely negotiating the surf zone. This class is primarily for students who want to undertake journeys at sea and may need to negotiate the surf zone for launching and landing. This course will emphasize identification of appropriate and inappropriate places to launch and land, and strategies for negotiating different kinds of surf, surf forecast, and observation skills.

We will practice launching, landing, holding position and maneuvering in the surf zone. The goal will be to maintain control! Surf Zone Skills will be scheduled a couple of times during the summer and fall. Call to reserve your spot in the next class.

Outline: Surf Zone Skills

  • Forecasting surf and weather
  • Observation and recognition
  • Identifying hazards and currents
  • Selecting appropriate surf locations
  • Learn to negotiate the surf safely
  • Swimming and surf rescue
  • Holding position and boat control
  • Safe and controlled landings

On the water, You Will Need:

- Tennis shoes or river sandals with wool socks or wetsuit booties
- Sunglasses with retention device (i.e. Croakies, Chums, etc)
- Sunscreen (SPF 30), lip balm (SPF 15)
- Sun hat, rain hat, and/or fleece hat
- Synthetic top and bottom (thermal underwear, heavier wt. for cooler weather)
- Rain coat and rain pants
- Nylon shorts and/or swimsuit
- Water bottle (1 quart)
- Towel and change of clothes for ride home
- Lunch and snacks

Optional Gear:
- Camera with film, batteries and dry storage
- Binoculars

Meeting Place/Directions:
This class meets at the Oregon Coast, location to be decided. You will receive detailed instructions and a map with your confirmation packet.
