Kids & Teens Sea Yakatak

ALL PADDLING GEAR PROVIDED NO EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

Location: This class is offered at our Portland location.

This five-day course for kids 10-14 provides instruction in safety, paddle strokes, bracing, rescues, rolling, and hydrology. Days one, two, three, and four take place on flat water. Day five is parent day and is conducted at a suitable coastal location. We invite you to come out and enjoy paddling as a family at the coast. The exuberance and natural learning ability of children never fails to keep the instructors' creative juices flowing!

The Sea Yakatak Kid's Class is usually scheduled once in Portland each summer. Call for details.

Outline: Kids & Teens Sea Yakatak

  • Fun games in kayaks
  • Introduction to basic equipment
  • Basic body mechanics and efficiency of stroke
  • Forward and reverse paddling
  • Sweep strokes
  • Draw strokes
  • Turning on the move
  • Edging while turning
  • Wet exits
  • Introduction to basic hydrology
  • Introduction to basic safety

On the water, You Will Need:

- Tennis shoes or river sandals with wool socks or wetsuit booties
- Sunglasses with retention device (i.e. Croakies, Chums, etc)
- Sunscreen (SPF 30), lip balm (SPF 15)
- Sun hat, rain hat, and/or fleece hat
- Synthetic top and bottom (thermal underwear, heavier wt. for cooler weather)
- Rain coat and rain pants
- Nylon shorts and/or swimsuit
- Water bottle (1 quart)
- Towel and change of clothes for ride home
- Lunch and snacks

Meeting Place/Directions:
The Sea Yakatak Classes are held in Portland. You will receive detailed instructions and a map with your confirmation packet.

Please remember to keep your personal gear to a minimum, but keep your comfort in mind. Remember the goal is to travel light and efficiently.
