PADDLING GEAR IS AVAILABLE FOR RENT
Previous experience required, Full Immersion 1 or equivalent is a prerequisite.

This class is offered at our Bend location.


If you are serious about river paddling, no matter what your skill level, it's always time for a comprehensive safety course. This one evening, 2-day course focuses on quick reactions to potential and real emergencies on the river. Topics include swimming rapids, throw bag work, mechanical advantages, accident scenarios, "live bait" rescues, rope techniques, a simulated strainer swim and much more.

The Whitewater Safety Workshop is scheduled a couple times a year. Call for more details.

Outline:  Whitewater Kayak Safety Workshop

  • Introduce basic rescue concepts
  • Throw bag practice
  • Common river issues & how to prevent them
  • Hypothermia discussion
  • Mechanical advantage
  • Swimming in Whitewater
  • Live Bait swims
  • Strainers


  • On the water, You Will Need:

    - Tennis shoes or river sandals with wool socks or wetsuit booties
    - Sunglasses with retention device (i.e. Croakies, Chums, etc)
    - Sunscreen (SPF 30), lip balm (SPF 15)
    - Sun hat, rain hat, and/or fleece hat
    - Synthetic top and bottom (thermal underwear, heavier wt. for cooler weather)
    - Rain coat and rain pants
    - Nylon shorts and/or swimsuit
    - Water bottle (1 quart)
    - Towel and change of clothes for ride home
    - Lunch and snacks

    Meeting Place/Directions:
    The Whitewater Kayak Safety Workshop is organized and run from our Bend store. You will receive detailed instructions and a map with your confirmation packet.

    If you have any questions about what to bring please contact us. Alder Creek has a full line of paddling equipment and accessories. We would be happy to assist you in getting outfitted for your trip. Please remember to keep your personal gear to a minimum, but keep your comfort in mind. Remember the goal is to travel light and efficiently.
