At Alder Creek Kayak & Canoe we strive to be the best in everything we do. Our instruction program is structured around the British Canoe system which is internationally recognized for its high level of quality and consistent standards. Classes form a progressive learning system that develops proficient paddling in a variety of conditions.
Introduction: No experience required to start. These classes introduce basic paddling skills and build an understanding of general on the water safety and environmental conditions. A must for everyone who is curious and wants to try paddling.
Foundations: Prerequisite: Completion of at least one of the Introduction classes. Foundations classes develop competence in basic paddle strokes and maneuvers, wet exits and assisted re-entries, general trip planning and group interaction. When ready, students have the opportunity to gauge their progress by pursuing the BCU Two Star Kayak award.
Refinement: Prerequisite: BCU Two Star Kayak award or comparable skill level required. Refinement classes focus on improving efficiency and effectiveness of strokes and maneuvers. They also prepare students in intermediate skills including, paddling in moderate current and waves, trip planning, and basic seamanship. On completion of these classes students have the opportunity to pursue their BCU Three Star Kayak award.
Alder Creek Tours: We offer tours for those people who want the security and convenience of having one of our staff members along to coordinate and lead your trip. We take care of you, the gear, trip logistics and food! Along the way we offer basic instruction (our staff is full of tips to make paddling easier and more fun!) but mainly this is a way to see what paddling is all about: get into nature, see wildlife, get exercise and have fun with family & friends while enjoying a unique environment.
Advancement: At Alder Creek we strive to offer classes that appeal to all skill levels. If you are looking to go further check out some of our more advanced offerings. This is where you will find many of our environment specific classes. British Canoe Union (BCU) Assessments: People choose to pursue BCU Star Awards for a variety of reasons. They include the desire to gauge ones level of paddling skills, the ability to adequately judge a persons capacity to take on a given journey and the recognition of the human need to constantly challenge and improve ourselves. Our goal is to provide the tools for long term paddler development. Other trainings and assessments are available. See our on-line calendar.
