Introduction level - no experience required but a Basic Skills Kayak class would be OK.
This class is offered at our
Portland location.
Develop your kayak skills and paddling awareness while camping and boating in an estuary along the Oregon coast. This outing introduces paddlers to the essential skills and appropriate gear needed for taking on day tours or multi day trips. The class is hands on. Our goal during the weekend is to expose you to the elements of a successful trip, from planning and participation, to completion.

On The Water, You Will Need:
- Tennis shoes or river sandals with wool socks or wetsuit booties
- Sunglasses with retention device (i.e. Croakies, Chums, etc)
- Sunscreen (SPF 30), lip balm (SPF 15)
- Sun hat, rain hat, and/or fleece hat
- Synthetic top and bottom (thermal underwear, heavier wt. for cooler weather)
- Rain coat and rain pants
- Nylon shorts and/or swimsuit
- Water bottle (1 quart)
- Towel and change of clothes for ride home
FOR CAMP:
-Sleeping bag and pad
-Tent (Alder Creek provides tarps
for group areas)
-Swimsuit
-1 pair walking shorts
-2 cotton T shirts
-Synthetic pile pants and jacket
-Rain coat and pants

Alder Creek provides dry bags for your personal gear and group gear for camp. If you have any questions about what to bring please contact us. Alder Creek has a full line of paddling equipment and accessories. We would be happy to assist you in getting outfitted for your trip. Please remember to keep your personal gear to a minimum, but keep your comfort in mind. Remember the goal is to travel light and efficiently.
Meeting Place/Directions:
We meet at the Whalen Island County Park in the Sand Lake Estuary at 9:00 am on Saturday. From Portland head west on Hwy 26 to Hwy 6, go south on Hwy 6 towards Tillamook. At the intersection of Hwy 6 and 101 turn South (left), go about 8 miles and turn right onto Sand Lake Rd. Follow Sand Lake Rd and turn right into Whalen Island County Park. Allow 1.5 to 2 hours. You will receive a map with your confirmation packet.
