Full Immersion 3 - Deschutes

ALL PADDLING GEAR PROVIDED or bring your own
FOUNDATION LEVEL:
Previous experience required, Full Immersion 1 or equivalent is a prerequisite

Location: This class is offered on the deschutes River near Maupin, OR.

Two days of paddling the Deschutes rivers exciting Class 3 rapids.  Fine tune your kayaking skills on the classic rapids - Wapinita, Box Car,  Surf City, Oak Springs, Trestle and Wreck rapids will keep you on point.  You have lots of opportunities to work on rolling, bracing, surfing, stern squirting and reading whitewater. We also cover river safety and rescue response.

 

The Deschutes Kayak School is generally scheduled once or twice a summer in June/July.

Outline: Deschutes Whitewater Kayak School

  • Practice reading a river
  • Start developing an intuitive roll on both sides
  • Start refining beginning skills by developing efficiency of strokes and using the features of the river
  • Practice rolling in current
  • Practice surfing skills
  • Practice stern squirts

On the water, You Will Need:
- Tennis shoes or river sandals with wool socks or wetsuit booties
- Sunglasses with retention device (i.e. Croakies, Chums, etc)
- Sunscreen (SPF 30), lip balm (SPF 15)
- Sun hat, rain hat, and/or fleece hat
- Synthetic top and bottom (thermal underwear, heavier wt. for cooler weather)
- Rain coat and rain pants
- Nylon shorts and/or swimsuit
- Water bottle (1 quart)
- Towel and change of clothes for ride home
- Lunch and snacks

For Camp:
- Sleeping bag and pad
- compact -Tent (Alder Creek provides tarps for group areas)
- Swimsuit
- 1 pair walking shorts
- 2 cotton T shirts
- Synthetic pile pants and jacket
- Rain coat and pants
- 2 pair underwear
- Towel (small)
- Toilet kit
- Long sleeve shirt
- Sunglasses w/strap (chums or croakies)
- Insect repellent
- Flashlight w/spare bulb and batteries
- Spare eye glasses or contacts
- Shoes and socks
- small dry bags to store personal gear

Optional Gear:
- Camera w/film, batteries, and dry storage
- Book
- Writing tablet and pen
- Fishing gear and license
- Folding chair (small)
- Musical instruments (check w/us to make sure it is appropriate)
- Binoculars

SPECIAL NOTE: This trip does not include food or beverage. We will have a group camp on Saturday night but the cost of the trip is for instruction and boater passes. BYOF & B.

 

Meeting Place/Directions:
The Deschutes River Kayak School is organized and run from our Jantzen Beach Portland store. We meet in maupin on Saturday Morning at 10 am.
