Location: The on water portion of the class is offered at our Portland location. The first night's classroom session meets at the Boathouse location near OMSI.
This 1.5 day course is designed for those paddlers carrying out coastal journeys. The aim of this course is to give the student the tools to enable them to plan and navigate effectively on coastal journeys in moderate sea conditions including islands up to 2 nautical miles offshore in areas of tidal movement up to 2 knots and winds of up to force 4 and is suitable for those seeking their 4 star award sea.
This course is designed to compliment the areas covered in the 4 star leader training and is a required prerequisite. This class fulfills requirements for the BCU Nav/Tidal planning course.
The Coastal Navigation and Tidal Planning course will be scheduled a couple of times during the summer and fall. Call to reserve your spot for the next one.
Outline: Coastal Navigation & Tidal Planning

Interpret sources of information including maps, charts, coastal pilots and tide tables.

Navigate on the water using visual references and simple pilotage techniques e.g. transits, dead reckoning and a compass.

Be able to source, interpret and apply a weather forecast to the marine environment

By the end of the course each student should have planned at least 2 coastal journeys that they can take home as references for further trip planning.

Understand tides and currents

Learn to identify conditions and how it effects a journey

Become aware of the range of resources required to plan trips

Take new skills to the water for a half day of practical application
On the water, You Will Need:
- Tennis shoes or river sandals with wool socks or wetsuit booties
- Sunglasses with retention device (i.e. Croakies, Chums, etc)
- Sunscreen (SPF 30), lip balm (SPF 15)
- Sun hat, rain hat, and/or fleece hat
- Synthetic top and bottom (thermal underwear, heavier wt. for cooler weather)
Meeting Place/Directions:
Strokes & Maneuvers classes meet at the Jantzen Beach store in N. Portland. You will receive detailed instructions and a map with your confirmation packet.
